Halloween Throw-down

It's Scarecrow vs. Pumpkin, both costumes having been purchased. I am for the cute, funny scarecrow I plan to embellish with all sorts of doo-dads and straw. Philip is for the Pottery Barn Kids felt pumpkin outfit that I am frightened will make him look like a girl, especially if he's wearing black tight pants underneath. How do you talk them into a costume they don't really know about? And should I force him to just be Superman or Lightening McQueen like everyone else?
